The start of World War I
World War I was started when a Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Ferdinand and his wife. After this Austria-Hungary and Germany declared war on Serbia. After that Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary and Germany which started a chain reaction until most of the world was involved. This is continuity because the Alliance system that caused Russia to become involved was already in place. This is theme three because it is the conflict between many of the political systems in the world. -
Bolshevik Revolution
Also known as the Russian revolution, the Bolsheviks came to power and established a Communist government. This revolution also caused Russia to pull out of World War I. This is change because this revolution set up the first communist nation. This is theme three because it is the creation of a communist state. -
End of World War I
On November eleventh in 1918 countries involved in World War I signed an armistice. It was ended with the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty was extremely toward the Allies favor and against Germany. This is continuity because wars have ended with armistices for centuries and is nothing new. This is theme three because it the end between the political systems of Fascism and democracy. -
Hitler comes to power in Germany
Adolf HItler was a member of the NAZI party. He becomes chancellor of Germany in 1933. He will eventually start World War II by invading Poland. This is change because his rise to power is associated with rise of Fascism in Europe. This is theme three because it is the creation of a Fascist government in Germany. -
Mussolini comes to power
Benito Mussolini was an Italian politician. He was also a leader of the National Fascist Party. He ruled Italy as a Prime MInister This is continuity because Hitler also rose to power as a Fascist. This is theme three because it is the creation of a Fascist state in Italy. -
Start of WW2
Adolf HItler slowly expanded Germany because no action was ever taken by the allies. When he invaded Poland the allies drew the line and declared war on the Germans. This is continuity because this is the second world war. This is theme three because it is the conflict between the countries of Germany, Italy and Japan against Britain, France, and later Russia and the United States. -
End of WW2
World War II had two ending dates the war had V-E day and V-J day. The allies defeated both Japan and Germany and Italy. This is continuity because Germany and it’s axis allies lost to the allies again. This is theme three because it is the end of the global conflict. -
The construction of the Berlin Wall
The wall was put up with the purpose to separate East and Western Germany. It was supposed to keep people in and out of Eastern Germany. This is Change because the wall changed people’s lives dramatically. Families and friends were separated and most of them never saw each other again. This is theme three because it is the interaction of the two political systems of democracy and communism. -
Destruction of the Berlin Wall
The wall was chipped down with hammers and chisels, piece by piece. This was a symbol of the start of the reunification of Germany. It was brought down because communism in other countries was failing and it got weaker and weaker. This is continuity because communism had failed in other nations and because Germany had been a unified country before. This is theme three because it is the interaction between the two political systems of communism and democracy. -
Fall of the USSR
This event left fifteen different nations on their own. Often these nations were involved with ethnic conflicts that weakened themselves or created new nations.This is change because it is the first time in seventy years that these countries were on their own. It is also associated with the end of the cold war. This is theme three because it is the deterioration of a major world political system.
