    Indian Civilization Act passed authorizing up to $10,000 a year to support religious groups teach Native Americans lead to many Mission Schools.

    Rough Rock Demonstration School opens in Arizona on the Navajo Nation which was the first school that was controlled by Native Americans.

    Navajo tribal council passes a resolution for a community college to reduce the college drop out rate for Native Americans.

    U.S. Senate subcommittee releases 'Indian Education: A National Tragedy, A National Challenge.' This report brings attention to the lacking education system in place for Native Americans provided by the government.
  • 1970 Survival Schools

    American Indian Movement (AIM) opens schools as an additional option for Native Americans instead of just public schools to help with the drop out rates. Focus mostly on living skills and promotes Native American culture. Many of these schools still exist today.

    Congress passed act to "preserve, protect, and promote the rights and freedoms of Native Americans to use, practice and develop" language. Promotes culture.
