The American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions starts 'saving' Native Americans. -
1819 Mission Schools
Indian Civilization Act passed authorizing up to $10,000 a year to support religious groups teach Native Americans lead to many Mission Schools. -
1879 Government Schools
Carlisle Boarding School, the first off-reservation boarding school was established. -
1928 Progressive Education
The Meriam Report was published by Johns Hopkins Press after an investigation was done of the Indian Office showing that the quality of schooling on these government run boarding schools was very poor. -
1934 The Indian New Deal
Indian New Deal grants certain rights for Native American's in response to the Meriam Report. -
1934 Johnson O'Malley Act
The JOM Act gives money to territories and states to pay for education for Native American students. -
1966 Self Direction
Rough Rock Demonstration School opens in Arizona on the Navajo Nation which was the first school that was controlled by Native Americans. -
1968 Tribal Colleges
Navajo tribal council passes a resolution for a community college to reduce the college drop out rate for Native Americans. -
1969 Indian Education
U.S. Senate subcommittee releases 'Indian Education: A National Tragedy, A National Challenge.' This report brings attention to the lacking education system in place for Native Americans provided by the government. -
1970 Survival Schools
American Indian Movement (AIM) opens schools as an additional option for Native Americans instead of just public schools to help with the drop out rates. Focus mostly on living skills and promotes Native American culture. Many of these schools still exist today. -
1990 Language Revitalization Act
Congress passed act to "preserve, protect, and promote the rights and freedoms of Native Americans to use, practice and develop" language. Promotes culture. -
2013 Bureau of Indian Education Schools
183 off-reservation boarding schools run by BIE in the United States today.
