California Gold Rush
Gold was found in the Sacramento Valley in early 1948. Thousands of miners traveled to San Fransisco to be apart of this historic event. In the end, $2 billion worth of gold was extracted from the ground. -
Homestead Act
Law signed by President Abraham Lincoln, which encouraged western migration by providing settlers 160 acres of public land. Once settlers moved west, they had to stay there for 5 years to be considered "owners" of the land. -
Purchase of Alaska
US Secretary of State William H. Seward, signed a treaty with Russia, which established that they would sell Alaska to the United States of America for $7 million. -
Annexation of Hawaii
Hawaii was declared an independent republic. This event happened while President William Mckinley was in office.
