The Original 13 Colonies
The original colonies were just groups of people from england sent to get money from the new lands. The colonists became upset with the unfair taxes and laws and declared their independence from Britian. The colonists fought against britian and drove the indians out to eventualy obtain what is the 13 original colonies -
NorthWest territory
The U.S. claimed the lands west of the original colonies after Great Britian recognized them as an independant country. They made 5 states out of the territory now known as Illinoise, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. For a territory to become a state the territory must have a population of 60,000, draft a constitution, ask for permision to join, provide public education, provide free land for vets, and prohibit slavery. -
Louisiana Purchase
The louisiana purchase was when the U.S. bought bought a butt load of land from spain. Buying the land almost doubled the U.S.'s land. President Jefferson bout all of this land for 15 Million dollars. The Louisiana Purchase included the Mighty Mississippi River which was important because the Mississippi river is the heart of the U.S. and played a huge part in our trading because people could use the river as transportation to get places easier lowering the prices of goods. -
Adams onis treaty
The southerners were mad at the seminole indians because they kept raiding their U.S. towns. They also helped slaves run away.
President monroe sent troops under Jacksons command, Jackson destroyed spains military and captured indians without permision. The Adams Onis treaty stated that Spain gives up eastern Florida and U.S. gives up west Florida -
Manifest Destiny
Manifest destiny is the belief that it is the U.S.'s destiny to expand over all of North America to benifit them economically, politically, and socially. We believed that god gave us the right to expand. -
Texas Annexation
First off the word annex means to add someting or to take over something. The Mexican government promised cheap land so Americans were moving to mexico. To live in Mexico the Americans would have to become Mexican citizens. In order to still remain an American citizen Texas Became an independant state. In 1835 they formed their own government and created a constitution molded after the U.S. Constitution. Although Texas declared its independance, Mexico still viewed Texas as part of Mexico. texa -
Texas Annexation Continued
viewed Texas as part of Mexico. The United States did not allow Texas to join the union as a state because it was a slave state and giving one more state to the slave states and not one to the free states would put the slave states at an advantage. -
Oregon Territory
The Oregon Territory was a place that Russia, England, Spain, and The U.S. were disputing over who got the land. The United States Of America didnt want to go to war with England so we signed a treaty stating that we shared power. Whington, Oregon, Idaho, and parts of Montana were created out of this territory. -
Mexican Cession
Mexico was mad at America because mexico considered Texas as a stolen state. Mexico cut all diplomatic conections to America and started the Mexican American War. The treaty named as The Treaty of Guadalupe was later signed ending the war. After the war America bought the Mexican Cession from Mexico creating California, Nevada, and Utah increasing The U.S.'s size by 25%. -
gadsden purchase
America was trying to put a stop to the Mexican American war so they bought the gadsden purchase. We paid $10 million for arizona and newmexico. With this purchase the contenential boundries are fixed but people still wanted to expand west.
