    Homestead Act
    The Homestead Act encourages settlement of "unoccupied" western lands. Along with the Union Pacific Railroad authorized to build a line from Nebraska to Utah to meet the Central Pacific. This lead to conflict with many native tribes.
    Sioux (or Santee) Uprising (or Dakota War) in Minnesota. Number of Indians killed is unknown, white deaths estimated at between 300 and 1,000.

    In 1864 Colonel John Washington take an expedition of soldiers through Navajo territory in a campaign against the Zuni. His route lead him straight through the community many of you live in, Lupton. This is one of the earliest recorded histories of the Lupton community by European Americans.
