  • Birth

    Birth
Werner was born December 5th, 1901 in Würzburg, Germany.
  • Early Years

    Early Years
Heisenberg studied at Maximillian school until around 1920 where he then went to University of Munich to study Physics under Sommerfeld, Max Born, and other scientific philosophers (Heisenberg). Soon after, he became a lecturer in Theoretical Physics at University of Copenhagen working with Niels Bohr.
  • Theory of Quantum Mechanics

    Theory of Quantum Mechanics
When Werner was only 23 years old, he published some of the first postulations of quantum mechanics. He introduced matrix mechanics, along with Max Born, as a more accurate way of measuring the motion of a particle. Due to a particles sporadic behavior, using classical mechanics would not work because it did not include the time dependent process within a particle such as exposure to radiation. So he began deriving with matrices in order to more accurately measure the quantum state of a particle
  • Uncertainty Principle

    Uncertainty Principle
One of the foundational concepts of quantum mechanics is the "Uncertainty Principle." This arises from the particle/wave duality of a particle as it could act different when observed. Heisenberg stumbled upon this scientific noose during his subsequent research and found that, "Any attempt to measure precisely the velocity of a subatomic particle, such as an electron, will knock it about in an unpredictable way, so that a simultaneous measurement of its position has no validity." (UOregon)
  • Nobel Prize in Physics & Later Work

Nobel Prize in Physics & Later Work
In 1932, Werner was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his publication on Quantum Mechanics, in which the application of led to the immediate discovery of allotropic forms of hydrogen (AHF). A few years later he then began working on Plasma Physics and studying the Thermonuclear Process in collaboration with the International Institute of Atomic Physics at Geneva (Werner), and in 1945 interned as part of the Manhattan Project to determine german scientist knowledge of the atomic bomb (AHF).
