    Japan Invades Manchuria
    On this day, Japan invaded Manchuria, owned by China, with hopes of gaining natural resources after the invasion. Japan won this battle, and was not punished by the League of Nations, even though the League of Nations should have gotten involved.

    The Holocaust was the German Nazi attempt at completely exterminating the Jewish population. This started in early 1933 and continued until sometime in 1945. By the time it was over, close to two-thirds of the entire Jewish population had been wiped out. That's calculates to almost 6 million.

    Hitler becomes chancellor, but at this point does not have much power in Russia.

    President Roosevelt attempts to get the USSR to help the Allies, because of their size and position, which was in the middle of Russia and their ally Japan. Sometime later, the USSR chose to side with the Allies.

    Benito Mussolini aids Germany by invading the North African country of Ethiopia. Other than tell them to stop, the League of Nations didn't do much about the situation.

    The neutrality act was made in an attempt to avoid joining either side of the war in Europe, so as to not get involved with foreign problems. The act was specifically made to stop arms trade with Spain.

    Germany annexed, or added, Austria into Germany. However, Austria wanted to be free from the grasp of Germany.

    Hitler met with leaders of France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Hitler was allowed to Annex Sudentenland, provided that he not attack elsewhere.

    On Nov. 20-23, 1940 Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary joined the Acxis Powers.

    4 million German troops invaded Russia. Over two and a half million Russians were killed, wounded, or taken prisoner by the time one month had passed.

    The Imperial Japanese Navy attacks a U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese forces used bombs and torpedoes, sinking 4 U.S. battleships and badly damaging many others.

    This battle was faught mostly by aircraft, and lasted four days. The U.S. won this battle against the Japanese, thus regaining control of the Pacific.

    This is the first time Americans seek combat in the war, and invaded North Africa, which was at that time controlled by the Germans.

    On this day, the Allies invaded Normandy and drove the German's out of France. This was very important for the Allies.
  • Victory in Europe

    Victory in Europe
    On this day, the Allies accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany. This meant that Adolf Hitler's Third Reich had come to an end. This meant that the war in Europe would go on no longer.
  • Hiroshima

    Hiroshima
    American bomber drop the first ever used atomic bomb on the Japanese city Hiroshima. 80,000 people were killed right away, and many more died or suffered from radiation.
  • Nagasaki

    Nagasaki
    A second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, which is also a Japanese city. This time 40,000 people were killed, with an additional amount of people later suffering or dying from radiation. It was after this, that the Japanese Emporer told his people that they would surrender.

    On September 2nd, 1945 Japan surrendered. This meant World War II was officially over.

    Germany gained control of Rhineland in order to see how France would react. France didn't do anything. Hitler continued expansion, because he figured that no one would try to stop him
