Germany invades Poland. Hitler was seeking to regain the portion of Poland that was lost in the First World War. Hitler preferred invasion and occupation. He had a secret nonaggressive pact with the USSR and knew that without Russia no one could stop Germany. He attacked when supposedly the negotiations between Poland and Germany broke down. -

Beginning of the Battle of Norway
Hitler wanted Norway to gain shipment control of iron ore to fuel the demands of the war. The Allies sought to blockade the ports of Norway to stop the shipments. -
End of the Battle of Norway
The battle was Nazi Germanys most difficult battle to date. Even with the help of the allies Nazi Germany took Norway and Denmark. Sweden and Finland were essentially controlled by default.
