  • Huey Long

    -Long was rollicking country lawyer who became governor of Louisiana in 1928
    -He propose against FDR at "shores of wealth plan" the poorest american's were promised an estate worth no less than $5,000 with a $2500 yearly minimum income guaranteed
    -He wasn't able propose against FDR the new deal because he was assassinated before he could do it
  • FDR First Team

    -Roosevelt's famous quote "only thing we have to fear, is fear itself" addressing himself to cause of the economic crisis and its moral dimensions, Roosevelt placed blame squarely on the greed and shortsightedness of bankers & businessmen
    -he defeated herbert hoover
    -major issue american's facing widespread unemployment
    -Great depression continued the nations economy continued to wheeze
  • 20th amendment

    -the 20th amendment was to move the inavguration up for feb. to jan. So two presidents will not be in office at the same time this period is called the "lame duck" period
    -"Lame Duck" is an elected official whose time in an office or position will soon end & does little as the president
  • 21st amendment

    -the 21st amendment repealed prohibition
    -the 21st amendment was ratified because many people had simply refused to accept the ban on alcohol
    -president harding drank alcohol in the white house during the prohibition
  • TVA (Tennesse valley authority)

    -is a federal owned corporation in the united states to provide navigation flood control, electricity generation, fertilize generation , fertilizer manufacturing and economic this was part of rooosevelts 3R's of the new deal
  • SEC

    -SEC was created to watch over the stock market, prevent fraud and guard against other stock market market collapse
    -was Roosevelt's reform against the new deal
  • Gold Reserve Act

    -united states had a bi-metallic system of money
    -silver was also traded
    -gold standard came to an end in 1933 when Roosevelt issued an executive order outlawing the ownership of gold besides jewelry
    -Roosevelt wanted people to rely on "flat money" [paper money]

    -Torpedoes was used to destroy submarines & ships from long distance b/c bullets couldn't go far & do alot of damage
    -bombing raids were used to destroy anything in a certain area such as factories that produce military equiped in WW2
    -wolf packs were german submarines that had mass attack tactics against convoys . a group of ships , warships & submarines that attack a certain target all at once
  • Robert Taft

    -Senate in 1938, he opposed Roosevelt's new deal because he felt it was socialism his alternative plan was calling for economy in government a balanced budget and a less centralization of power in the nations capital
  • Rationing

    -Rationing is controlled distribution of scare resources & goods
    -Rationing items were gasoline, tires, meat , butter & jellies
    -people had to use "rationing goods" which used to each family based on its size

    -way to remove money from circulation as well as reduce inflation
    -people would buy bonds & the gov promised to return to them w/ interest after 10 years or more
    -gov needs the $$$ to pay for war equipment

    Code Talkers

    -Navajo code talkers played a key role in the pacific campaign the american military needed an undecipherable code that could not be broken by the japanese the navajo language is unwritten and extremely complex american forces could transmit messages by telephone and radio in a code that the japanese were unable to break

    WACS

    -Women joined he new women's army corps (WACS) after basic training most of these women took clerical jobs in the military women replaced jobs formerly held by men such as ship building and aircraft production the idea was to have women fill jobs held men to send more men to war. Between 1941-1945 more than 6.5 mil women entered the work force
  • WAVE

    -Women accepted for volunteer emergency service (waves) was created in 1942 in response to the need for additional military personnel during WW2 waves were an official part of the navy,member held the same rank and ratings as male personnel waves could not serve aboard combat ships or aircraft and initially were restricted to avity in the contiential US at the end of WW2 there were over 8,000 female officers

    -acted a chief of staff and the "organizer of victory"
    -worked closely w/ roosevelt to urge military to prepare by pearl harbor
    -built a Army of 8 million men
    --later helped oversee the creation of the first atomic bomb

    -okies- farm families from southern plains who migrated to California in 1930
    -people think they are migrating to California for better future but reality it is hard to find jobs.
    -route 66 was the path migrant farmers used to get to California from the dust bowl area
  • Francis townsend

    -Dr. francis T. was an american physician who devised the townsend plan, a popular proposal for state-funded old-age pensions
    -planed to end great depression by opening jobs for young people
