Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was elected after a deal was made with Southern Democrats, which withdrawal ed all solders, ending reconstruction. -

49 blacks were lynched. -
October 15, 1883
Court ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was unconstitutional. Only states couldn't discriminate, not citizens. -

Southern states adopted new constitution and voting laws against black voters. -

Ida B. Wells began writing articles and campaigning about lynching. In this year, about 161 blacks were lynched. Highest in a year. -

Woodrow Wilson institutionalized segregation in the federal civil service. By the end of WW1, the district of Columbia was segregated as well. -

Every southern state and many northern cities established had Jim Crow laws put in place. -
1914
Marcus Garvey established the United Negro Improvement Association in Jamaica, which promoted black nationalism and pan - African ism. Later in the decade, Garvey moved his headquarters to NYC and the UNIA became a large grassroots movement.
