Deborah Sampson was born
She was the oldest of 6 kids. Their family was very poor and had a very small house. -
No Parents
Deborah's mother left Deborah and her brothers and sisters when they were young, because she couldn't take care of them. Years earlier their father died in a shipwreck. -
Miss. Fuller
When Deborah's mother left, Deborah's cousin took her in and her name was Miss. Fuller. -
Indentured Servant
After Miss. Fuller died, Mrs. Thatcher took Deborah in and then she got too old and went to go live with relatives. When Deborah was 8, the Thomases took her in and gave Deborah a bed, clothing, and food, if she became their indentured servant. -
School
The Thomas boys got to go to school, but Deborah begged Mr. Thomas but he would not let her go to school. He said that because there was too much work to do around the house and farm. So at night, Deborah would steel the boy's school books and she would read them. -
Becoming Free
The Thomases let Deborah go after ten years, but they wanted her to stay for the winter, so she stayed and helped them. -
War
She realized that war was not an adventure it was horrible. She saw people cry, get shot, and die right in front of her. -
Getting My Supplies
I had to sew my own uniform and enough money to buy myself shoes and a 3 corned hat. -
Signed Up
When Spring came I had to march to Taunton. I walked 10 miles but I kept going in circles! I gave up and decided to go back. -
The Continental Army
After Deborah's attempt in the army, she decided to sign up for the Continental Army. -
The Tories
The Tories were with the British and were steeling the Americans supplies and food. One day some soldiers including Deborah went to take back some of the food from the Tories. In a cave, they found jars of honey, butter, cheese, and bacon. They were caught and the Tories started shooting. -
Shot!
After the Tories started shooting Deborah felt something warm run down her neck, and she touched the back of her neck and saw that it was blood. Then she saw that her leg was bloody. Within 10 minutes she fainted. -
Hospital
Deborah woke up and the nurse saw that she woke up and went to go get the doctor. He had the bullet already taken out. The doctor asked if she had any other wounds. She told him no, but he knew her leg was shot. She told him that she felt dizzy. He gave her a small room to rest. -
Getting the Bullet Out
Once the doctor left, she used my pocketknife to take the bullet out. She didn't want the doctor to take it out, because then they would know that her legs were girl legs. The doctor gave her medicine and bandages for her neck so she used them for her leg. -
Going Back to War
Deborah's leg healed but not properly. So, she went back to war. -
Helping Richard Snow
Deborah went back to march, and on the march she was marching next to a man named Richard Snow. He fainted and she had to help she found a farm home, and it was too late Richard Snow had died. -
A Women! What?!
None of the soldiers or generals couldn't beleive it! She put on the fanciest dress she could find and they still couldn't beleive it. After that they took it all in and realized she was a women they gave her an excellent record of service. -
Getting Married
Deborah met a man named Benjamin Gannet, and they got married very shortly after. -
Getting Sick
A sickness was spreading in Philadelphia and Deborah got it. She fainted and ended up in the hospital again. When she woke up she had a very high fever and she didn't have enough strength to speak.The nurse got the doctor and when they came back she had slipt back into a coma. The doctor examined her and found out she was a women! -
Children
Deborah and Benjamin had 3 kids 2 girls and 1 boy. They also took in a girl named Susanna and treated her as their own daughter -
Death
Deborah Sampson died at the age of 67 in 1827. She later got a statue of herself.
