    The 12,000 men and women of the Continental Army who arrived in Valley Forge on December 19, 1777 with Commander In Chief, General George Washington, were half-starved and no longer believed they could win a war of independence from Britain. The Patriot Army had lost the Battle at Brandywine on September 11, 1777 and the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777. They had been forced to retreat at both battles. This left them discouraged.

    Baron von Steuben was a prussian soldier who knew a lot about warfare and soldier training. He helped the soldiers get through the tough winter. His assistants were Alexander Hamilton, and General George Washington's aide Nathaniel Greene.In addition to helping the soldiers in fighting, Von Steuben also taught them better camp sanitation.

    John Paul Jones was born in Scotland but later moved to Virginia. He began fighting British ships in 1775 winning some impressive battles.In 1777, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to France so he could fix his ship. From there he sailed north to Britain and fought many battles while he was there.The Bonhomme Richard had 42 gun and the two British ships combined had 72 guns ,but Jones outsmarted the two captains and took a victory.
