    On June 27, 1950, Harry Truman order U.S. air and sea forces to begin assisting the South Korean forces against the North Koreans. 27 July 1953, marked the signing of the Armistice which ended fighting in the region and divided the peninsula along the 38th parallel. However, the war never officially ended and US forces remain along the DMZ to this day.
