The Spanish Civil War began on July 17,1936, when Generals Emilio Mola and Francisco Franco started an uprising to overthrow the democratically elected Republic. Franco led a general uprising in the Canary Islands and then moved to Spanish Morocco, being supported by other garrisons on the peninsula.
