On July 17, 1936, the Spanish Civil War begins as a revolt by right-wing Spanish military officers in Spanish Morocco which spreads to Spain. General Franco broadcasts a message calling all army officers to join the uprising and overthrow the Republican government. In three days, the rebels captured Moroco, much of northern Spain, and key cities in the south. -
