Impressment of Sailors
During the years leading up to 1812 many American sailors were being taken and forced to work for the British Royal Navy. Britain would seize American ships to stop trade with France. The British would be search the ships for any people who ran away from serving the British military. Sailors would be taken off their ships and accused of being a traitor, which was not okay. -
Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality
War was occurring between France and Britain, and American was supposed to ally with France because of the previous alliance they had established; however, Washington felt United Stated needed time of peace, so that it could strengthen and grow as a country. -
Jays Treaty
The Jay Treaty was made with Britain as the only alternative option to war. The Treaty was supposed to make British leave American land and return the sailors they stole while seizing ships. This treaty was only supported by the federalist, while the anti-federalist believed the United State should just declare war against Britain. The Jay Treaty was unsuccessful. Americans were violating the tarries (British Loyalist), which was a violation of the treaty of pairs. -
Washington's Farewell Address
Washington gave a speech , the farewell address, to announce that he was leaving the office and serving no more than two terms as president. During Washington's farewell address he warned America to avoid permanent alliances with foreign nations. He believed America should stay neutral and have as little connection with alliances. Washington also talked about patriotism and national unity, which he believed were important features needed in America. -
Chesapeake-Leopard Affair
British and Americans ships came in contact at the coast of North folk Virginia. The British sailors confronted the American ship to look for four British royal navy members who had ran away from the British Navy.There was fighting and four men were taken from the Chesapeake (american ship), and tried for desertion from the Royal navy. One was found guilty and hanged. The other 3 had American citizenship, but where taken back to Britain. This was a big deal because they were navy ships. -
Embargo Act 1807
Jefferson passed the Embargo acts to stop all American ships from trading with foreign ports. Jefferson passed thee acts in the attempt to get back and France and Britain for mistreating and seizing American ships throughout their conflict. America was trying to remain neutral, and these acts were a desperate attempt to make France and Britain respect the Americans and leave them out of the war; however the Embargo Acts were unsuccessful and hurt America much more then the foreign countries. -
Tecumseh (2)
Tecumseh was in the south trying to recruit the Creeks into his group of people. While there the Americans came to Prophets town and defeated the prophet, Tecumseh's brother, in the battle of the Tippecanoe. The confederation of Indians tried to keep the American settlers from further expanding their land in the Indian land; however the Americans won in a counterattack. Joins the British won after this battle. -
War Hawks
During the time of American mistreatment, the war hawks were the members of congress who strongly believed in going to war with Great Britain in 1812. The war hawks argued that the U.S should go to war because Britain violated the war time rights, they were taking American sailors, and they were arming the Indians and making them attack America. Henry Clay was an important Member of the war hawks, he was a key contributor in pushing for war against Britain in congress. -
War of 1812 Begins
The war began because America was mad about the constant mistreatment Britain was butting them through.Although war did break out both the house and senate where divided about the decision.Federalist were strongly against the war with Britain because Britain was Americas main source of trade.Canada was the first attack made almost immediately after the war was declared. They were defeated,but the war continued and Americans began to gather victories against Britain which boosted the patriotism. -
Tecumseh killed
He was killed by Americans and the Indians began to collapse without his leadership. Battle of the Thames. -
Hartford Convention
This was a secret meeting of federalist from the new England states ( Delegates from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Vermont) to discuss their opinions about the war of 1812. Some federalist from these states were so angry about the war that they wanted to separate and make peace with Britain. The convention asked the government to supply financial ad to help aid New England's Trade. Federalist threatened to succeed (leave the U.S) if demands weren't met. -
Treaty of Ghent
After the American victory at Lake Champlain, a peace treaty was signed which ended the war of 1812. The treaty failed to mention anything about the rights of Americans and the imprisonment of sailors; however, the treaty opened up the region of the Great Lakes to America. Status quo none of the problems were being fixed because of the war, so both sides agreed to stop fighting because they could no longer afford it. Britain was fighting Neapolitan, and U.S couldn't trade with Britain. -
Battle of New Orleans
Andrew Jackson and a group of fighters decided to do a nighttime attack on the British, after the treaty was Ghent treaty was signed. The Americans formed a line of soldiers around the Mississippi River. This battle was one of the bloodiest battles that accrued in the time of the war, and it resulted in a victory for the Americans.
