Chapter 1
Joey is bought by Alber’s father in an auction, when Albert saw Joey for the first time, they both knew they were going to be best friends. -
Chapter 2
Albert’s mother didn’t want Joey at their farm but Albert promised her that he was going to take care of him and train him. Albert’s father bet that he could plough the land of his farm in less than one month, so he came with a whip and Joey was afraid of what he could do to him so he kicked him. -
Chapter 3
Albert and Joey were bonding, meanwhile Albert’s mother tries to convince Albert that his father is not a bad person. Although Albert’s father lost the bet and he recurred to sell Joey to a military base. -
Chapter 4
Unfortunately Albert’s father sold Joey but Captain Nicholls tells Albert that he likes his spirit. Maybe someday he can join the cavalry and find him. -
Chapter 5
Joey was in the army with his new rider, Corporal Samuel Perkins. Captain Nicholls had promised Albert that he was going to take care of him so after a talk with Perkins they both decided that Captain Nicholls was going to be Joey’s rider. -
Chapter 6
During the first battle Joey loses his rider, Captain Nicholls, in the charge. Captain Stewart tells Joey that Nicholls died leading the charge and that he would be proud of him. -
Chapter 7
After the Captain Nicholls’s death, Joey gets a new rider, Trooper Warren. He wasn’t a very good rider but he was a good man, Joey and Warren started to bond peacefully. -
Chapter 8
Captain Stewart and Trooper Warren are taken by the Germans as prisoners of war. Horses and men fall in both sides of the battle. -
Chapter 9
Herr Hauptmann, a limping German officer covered in bandages, orders his men to take good care of the horses. One night, while Topthorn and Joey were sleeping, they were visited by a man with his granddaughter. (Emilie and his grandfather.) -
Chapter 10
Joey and Topthorn are treated like heroes by the Germans. They even receive a war medal. In the evenings, the young girl, Emilie, takes care of the two horses, brushing them and offering companion. -
Chapter 11
Emilie is still weak from her illness, but she does her best to take care of the horses. As the battles move farther away, Joey is really desperated to return to the work of a farm horse. -
Chapter 12
The horses have to work in horrible conditions, trudging through deep mud that rubs raw the skin on their lower legs. -
Chapter 13
Joey, Topthorn, and the Haflingers are put in hands of Crazy Old Friedrich, who takes good care of them. -
Chapter 14
Joey refuses to leave Topthorn's aside, even as the shelling begins. Friedrich runs, but he's not fast enough. An explosion kills him, too, leaving him face-up on the ground next to Topthorn's body. -
Chapter 15
he's surrounded by gunfire and explosions on all sides. He runs again, only to get caught up in a barbed wire fence. -
Chapter 16
Two soldiers, one from each side, British and German,wave white flags and approach Joey, who is stuck in the middle of the trenches. -
Chapter 17
Joey is loaded into a veterinary wagon and trundled off to the British horse hospital. -
Chapter 18
Joey gets to go for a walk with Albert to regain his strength. After, Albert and Joey daydream about the end of the war and going back home. -
Chapter 19
Albert has to first take care of all the sick and dying horses recovered from the battlefield. -
Chapter 20
Joey was sold to Emilie's grandpa. He would put the money that he need to had that horse -
Chapter 21
Emilie's Grandpapa tells Albert the long sad story of Emilie and Joey. After one final hearty cry, the old man offers to sell Joey to Albert for a penny and a promise: "that Albert will always love Joey as much as Emilie did"
