The bank was robbed by John, Clarence, and their brother Alfred Anglin, who walked into the bank and demanded the clerk open the vault and cash drawers and left the bank with around $19,000. The men were later caught and sentenced to 15-20 years in Atlanta Penitentiary where they met Morris.

    The Anglin Brothers were sent to Alcatraz after they attempted to escape Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary, where they were sent after being moved to Florida State Prison. John arrived at Alcatraz on October 21, 1960, and his brother Clarence followed on January 10, 1961. Morris was sent to Alcatraz after he escaped from Louisiana State Penitentiary and was caught and tried again, he was sentenced to serve 14 years at Alcatraz in 1960.

    The Anglin Brothers and Frank Morris escaped their cells by using sharpened spoons they had taken from the cafeteria during their meal times. They used Papier Mache heads to simulate their own and made a break for the mainland. While in the prison the three men overheard an inmate mentioning an underground tunnel system that ran right below their cells.

    The boat was made out of raincoats that the three men had sewn together. It is said the boat was found floating in the ocean by a cargo ship, but no human remains were found inside as the authorities had suspected. The three men used the boat to travel from the prison's island to the mainland in San Francisco Bay. There is a story that one of the guards saw a white light shining in the ocean near the prison but chose to ignore it thinking it may have been from the nearby lighthouse.
