Before the war, Wake Forest began to incorporate girls into campus life. Students brought 300 Meredith Angels to sit amongst the students and the V.M.I game in 1941.

Almost everyone on campus was involved in some type of religious group on campus. There were often religious discussions, mission study work, different sunday schools and lots of the different denominations of the churches. A freshman chapel was also on campus for the students, showing how much of their life was invovled in religious affairs.

One of the many sports that were played and was the pride of Wake Forest. Later, the army comes and uses their field for drills and morning roll calls.

The buildings Gore gymnasium was previously used for various sports as well as the Physical Education classes . The Heck WIlliams Library Building was the common library on campus where Wake Forest students could study.

Dec 8, 1941. The United States declared war on Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Three days later, December 11, 1941, war was declared on Nazi Germany. The United States was now engaged on two fronts. All manufacturing was transformed to create a military machine complex across America.

Alumni News March 1942. Due to the recent decline in incoming students due to the draft and young men going to war, parts of the Wake Forest College needed to make changes in order to stay. this involved combining resources between the Duke and Wake Law school, allowing for continued output of graduates.

Alumni News December 1942. The original Finance School was at a maximum capacity of 500 servicemen. This article states that an agreement was reached for an expansion of 700 soldiers, reaching 1,200 maximum for the Finance School.

At the very beginning of the 1943 Howler yearbook, they make it clear that they were well aware of the war.

Soldiers started filling up the school and taking over different buildings. The Gore Gymnasium was turned into barracks for the troops.

There were a handful of the studens who brought out their disapproval of the war and tried to get people not to go in to the war. Not everyone was thrilled about having the soldiers on their campus and wanted America to finish or pull out of the war. This is a headline about related matters.

The Army became part of the student body. Playing baseball in front of different buildings, playing ping-pong with the students, involving the girls in their dances and the guys in their "frolics". Many of the Wake students learned different military disciplines that they incorporated into their own lives.

The Old Gold and Black newspaper started publishing a "With the Men In Service" article each issue they published to keep the students informed of different soldiers or men who were related to Wake Forest and involved in the war.

We get to know more of his background of a West Point graduate and his work on campus so far. Included are also the obstacle course installed on campus and the army using the area outside Wait Hall for roll call.

ERC students at Wake Forest were called to duty to the war.

In mid-April some of Wake Forest's students were called to duty and some dreaded it. One of the seniors replaced a direction sign with three days until they were relocated.

Dances were held with the soldiers that had taken over different parts of Wake Forest Univesity.

Wake was well aware of it's different alumni or former students who were now flying planes in the army during the war. They lost many men to such positions.

Sicily Invasion News Footage The Allies have seizes North Africa and have now made the trip across the Meditteranean and have begun the invasion of the European mainland. Sicily was the prelude to the invading Italy.

The italian army surrenders to Allied forces. However, the Nazi presence was increased and slowed the American march through Italy to a slow crawl. Rome would not be liberated until June 1944.

The Army took breaks and played music while relaxed at places such as the old well, the book store and several other areas where they could relax.

In December, the Army Finance school took over the Gore Gymnasium, along with all the lockers, showers, courts and everything in it. The Physical Education classes were moved outside onto the Gore Field. Students became very involved in ping-pong as a result of their gym being used.

A bill is being sent to the senate soon stating that the government provide $1 Billion to pay for veterans to go to college. Wake Forest University is now one school that veterans can choose to attend.

The Army Finance School will officially leave on Saturday. After their year and a half stay, the Army Finance School departs to their original army base since enough soldiers have been trained for the army.

Wake Forest University will host their 4th War Loan Drive held from Jan.18-Feb.15. Wake Forest was given a quota of $100,000 to reach.

The Philomathesian Society is a literay and debate society founded in 1827. The Phi's were very proud of the hundreds of Phi alumni from Wake Forest that went to WWII.

Wake Forest University and Duke University combined their Law Schools in Durham. This was a war-time measure made necessary by the departure of student, prospective students and professors.

After, over two months from the invasion at Normandy, the Allied forces had reached and freed Paris from Nazi forces.

Every year the Old Gold and Black does a fundraiser and this year they decided to send the soldiers copies of Wake Forest Newspaper. Soldiers were writing home asking the school to send them the Old Gold and Black because they wanted to know what was going on at home.

This passage is from the Howler and gives a brief explanation of the students at Wake Forest during 1944-45. This year was the most feminine year. Out of 552, 120 students were women. This passage also talks about how they lost a lot of students to WWII. This explains why it was the most feminine year.

The students at Wake decided to donated money to the United War Fund Drive. The United War Fund Drive collected money and gave it to our troops overseas. Wake Forest's goal was to reach $400 and so far they have collected $269.34.

College enrolment was greatly increased upon the return of the veterans. Many students, who enrolled as freshman but were forced to leave to serve in WWII, could be found back on campus to complete the degrees at Wake Forest.

The rise of fraternities were a large result of the return of the veterans. This year saw a large increase in size and number of fraternity members across campus.
