Violeta was born on October 18th 1929. She was born in Rivas Nicaragua to a wealthy family with a history of political involvement. She also grew up during a politically charged time. Chamorro is now 85 years old. -

Terminal Lung Cancer
In June 1947 Violeta’s father was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. After her father died she went back to Nicaragua. Doing this she was cutting her schooling in the United States short. -
Marriage
In 1950 Violetta married Pedro Joaquin Chamorro. In total they had known each other for one year. After being married they then had five children together. -
Husband Assassinated
On January 10th 1978 her husband was assassinated. They were married for 28 years when he was killed. When he died Violeta took over the newspaper that her husband used to do. -
Relationship with the United States
In 1990 the United States contributed to the election that brought Violeta to power. They allocated 9 million dollars to aid her party and created systems that monitored the election process. This left Chamorro and the United States with a good relationship. -
Presidency
Chamorro became president of Nicaragua on April 25th, 1990. This was when she unseated Daniel Ortega. Most people were very shocked that she beat him in the election. -
Suppressing Violence
In 1994 the recontras attempted to resurface, Violeta Chamorro quickly suppressed the violence. She did this through a peace agreement -
"Dreams of the Heart" Published
In 1996 Violeta’s book was published. This book was about her life and it was an autobiography since she wrote it about herself. This book was called Dreams of the Heart and told the story of how she became president when all odds were against her. -
Period as President Over
In January 1997 Chamorro was barred from running for a second term. So Violeta retired from politics when her term ended (1997). This means she was president for 7 years, 1990-1997. -
Revolutionary Junta
In July 1979 Sandinista guerrillas led by Daniel Ortega rode into Managua in triumph. Violeta was with them. She was with them as part of a “five member revolutionary junta. ( A junta is a military or political group that rules a country after taking power by force)
