  • The Gulf of Tonkin incident

    The Gulf of Tonkin incident was a major international incident that led to the US taking a more active role in the Vietnam War. It included a confirmed confrontation on August 2, 1964, and a claim of a second confrontation on August 4, 1964, in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin between ships from North Vietnam and the United States.
  • Operation rolling thunder

    Operation Rolling Thunder was the codename for an American bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. U.S. military aircraft attacked targets throughout North Vietnam from March 1965 to October 1968. This massive bombardment was intended to put military pressure on North Vietnam’s communist leaders and reduce their capacity to wage war against the U.S.-supported government of South Vietnam.
  • Pentagon papers

    The Pentagon Papers was the name given to a top-secret Department of Defense study of U.S. political and military involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967.
  • Tet offensive

    The Tet Offensive was a coordinated series of North Vietnamese attacks on more than 100 cities and outposts in South Vietnam. The offensive was an attempt to foment rebellion among the South Vietnamese population and encourage the United States to scale back its involvement in the Vietnam War.
  • Mai Lai massacre

    The Mai Lai massacre was the mass murder of unarmed 347- 504 unarmed South Vietnamese civilians in Sơn Tịnh District, South Vietnam, on March 16, 1968 during the Vietnam War. They were killed by U.S. Army soldiers from Company C, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment and Company B, 4th Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade, 23rd (Americal) Infantry Division.
  • Use of the draft

    The draft lottery was the first time a lottery system had been used to select men for military service since 1942. The Selective Service System of the United States conducted two lotteries to determine the order of call to military service in the Vietnam War for men born from January 1, 1944 to December 31, 1950.
  • Kent State Shooting

    The Kent State shootings occurred on May 4, 1970 in Kent, Ohio, when the Ohio National Guard killed four unarmed Kent State University students and injured nine others. The killings occurred during a peace rally opposing the expansion of US military participation in the Vietnam War into neutral Cambodia, as well as a demonstration of the National Guard's presence on campus.
  • Easter offensive

    The Easter Offensive was a military campaign conducted by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN, the regular army of North Vietnam) against the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN, the regular army of South Vietnam) and the United States military between 30 March and 22 October 1972, during the Vietnam War.

    Operation Linebacker was the codename of a U.S. Seventh Air Force and U.S. Navy Task Force 77 air interdiction campaign conducted against North Vietnam from 9 May to 23 October 1972, during the Vietnam War.
  • Paris peace accords

    The Paris Peace Accords was a peace treaty signed on January 27, 1973, to establish peace in Vietnam and end the Vietnam War.
