Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
This authorized the retaliation of North Vietamese without technically declaring war. This allowed President Johnson to use any military force to keep peace in southeast asia and fight back against communism. -
Tet Offensive
70,000 North Vietnamese and Vietcong started offensive against Southern Vietnamese cities and U.S military. News coverage of the event shocked the Amertican public and further degraded support for the war. -
My Lai Massacre
U.S Soldiers brutally massacre 500 men women and choldren in a small south Vietnamese village of My Lai. They were able to cover up the incident for an entire year until only one of the fourteen officers was convicted. -
Vietnamisation introduced
This involved the training of and epuiping of SOuth vietnamese to fight against the Viet Minh and the Viet Cong. THis allowed Nixon to slowly pull U.S troops out of the wat effort. -
Invasion of Cambodia
Objective of the invasion was to defeat a force of 40,000 Vietcong and Viet Minh. Cambodia's neutrality in the Vietnam war allowed North Vietnamese fighters to establish bases and organize attacks on the south. -
Fall of Saigon
North Vietnamese captured the current city of Ho Chin Minh to mark the end of the Vietnam war. The introduction of Vietnamisation slowly pulled U.S troops out of Vietnam and left the South VIetnamese to fend for themselves.
