Nov 22, 1963 President Kennedy is assaninated in Dallas, Texas Aug 7, 1964 Congress pass the Tonkin Gulf Resolution, which gave the president power to take all necessary measures and to prevent further aggression Mar 6, 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson sent U.S. Marines to Da Nang, South Vietnam. The Marines were the first ground troops in the war. Jan 30, 1968 North Vietnam and the Viet Cong launched a major campaign against South Vietnamese cities. Jun 8, 1969 President Richard M. Nixon announced that U.S. troops would begin to withdraw from Vietnam. Jan 27, 1973 The United States, North and South Vietnam, and the Viet Cong signed a cease-fire agreement Mar 29, 1973 The last U.S. ground troops left Vietnam. Apr 30, 1975 South Vietnam surrendered
