When President Roosevelt died, Harry Truman then stepped in as President of the United States. Truman had to step in as President at a very stressful, high-stakes time in history. He was signed off on the bombings in Japan and declared war against North Korea. -
Viet Minh Gains Power
Ho Chi Minh announces Vietnam's independence on this day. Dien Bien Phu fell to the Vietnamese after a 4 month battle.

Vietnam splits between North and South
When France participates in the Peace Talks in Geneva, Vietnam was split into North and South. -
Weapons begin moving South
Weapons and men from North Vietnam are beginning to make their way into the South. American aid and number of military advisors in the South also rise. -
Gulf of Tonkin
The U.S. claims that North Vietnamese patrol boats fire on U.S. Navy boats. The Gulf of Tonkin pushed the U.S. to join the Vietnam War.

As opposition to the war rises in the U.S. at this same time, Nixon decides to reduce ground troops in Vietnam. -
Paris Peace Accords
A cease-fire was signed in Paris that would bring peace to Vietnam, end all U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War and temporarily stop fighting between North and South Vietnam. Link text -

The North Vietnamese invade and take over the south after South Vietnamese President Duong Van Minh surrenders -
Vietnamese Troops Withdraw from Cambodia
After having initially invading Cambodia in 1979, Vietnamese troops withdrawal.
