U.S supports coup of Diem
The United States sends in people to overthrow South Vietnam goverment. The president of south Vietanm, Diem, was assassinated as a result. He was killed againsr Kennedy's wishes/ orders. -
Tonkin Gulf Resolution
This resolution granted President Johnson broad military powers. Now Johnson may send in soilders in to other countries without delcaring war. This resolution will lend to more military from the U.S. in Vietnam. -
Operaion Rolling Thunder Begins
Operation Rolling Thunder was to use United State's aircrafts to bomb parts of North Vietnam. The goal of these bombings where to weaken the north's military. This operation was the first big invasion in North Vietnam by the U.S., showing an increase in America's involvement. -
My Lai Massacre
The My Lai Massacre was a huge "wake up" to the U.S. citizen about what is really happening in Vietnam. The massacre was conducted by a gourp of American soilders who killed most of the people, including woman and children, in a village called My Lai. This killing wasn't told or discovered by the public until 1969. -
Martin Luther King Jr Assassinated
Martin Luther King Jr was the leader of the Civil Rights movement on America. He used tactics of peaceful protest and non-violent means of getting equal. Dispite all of his efforts for peace, violence from others kills him in the end. -
Operation Rolling Thunder Ends
Operation Rolling Thunder wasnt a complete success. North Vietnam didn't have a very good air force, but with help from China and the USSR, they were able to devolpe a great surface to air defense. The North Vietnemese in the end where able to take down hundreds of U.S. planes. -
Richard Nixon President
Richard Nixon ran for Presidency and won. He ran as a republican. He also promises to pull out of the vietnam war and end it peacefuly and soon.
