Vietcong was formed by Ho Chi Minh. These people are a guerrilla army which had high amounts of people who were from South Vietnam. They were also skilled at blending in with the public, which made them all the harder to kill. -
Buddhist Crisis
Diem, the Catholic leader of South Vietnam, banned the religious flag for Buddha's birthday. Buddhists protested resulting in 9 deaths and 14 injuries. -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident
America first claimed that the destroyer USS Maddox was attacked by three boats from North Vietnam. This gained more support for the war. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Both the Senate and the House passed this bill allowing the president to have more power when it comes to war. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
Johnson expanded America's involvement in North Vietnam with a
gradual bomb campaign. This lasted until November 2nd, 1968. -
SDS March on Washington
Students for a Democratic Society(SDS) held a march on Washington D.C with over 20,000 people there to protest the war. -
National Teach-In
Around 122 colleges held a teach-in. The did this for over than 100,000 people who did not like the war and wanted it to end. -
Tet Offensive
North Vietnam(using the Vietcong) had a supersize attack on South Vietnam. The Vietcong suffered heavy loses, to the point where they were nearly destroyed. -
My Lai Massacre
Massacre of around 300 civilians in South Vietnam committed by the US army, located in Son My Village. -
Assassination of Robert Kennedy
While running in the democratic primary, Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel and died later in a hospital. Later, Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of Kennedy's murder. -
Democratic Convention
Johnson shocks the nation by announcing that he would not run again due to his low numbers in the poles. Protesters gathered outside the convention which was surrounded by barbed wire and police.The democrats weren't looking to good when the telly showed the protesters getting attacked by the police. -
Richard Nixon Elected
Republican Richard Nixon was elected president. He defeated Humphrey by over 100 electoral votes, although the distance between him and Humphrey when it came to the popular vote was slim.
