On this day the current president of the United States, John F Kennedy was assassinated which forced LBJ to take over and gave him executive control over the Vietnam war. -
Qui Nonh
The Vietcong placed a bomb in a hotel. When the bomb exploded 23 American Servicemen were killed. This pushed LBJ to order combat. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
Johnson authorizes Operation Rolling Thunder in effort to force North Vietnam to hault. Operation Rolling Thunder was a series of air raid bombings on Vietnam. -

The first bombing raids of Operation Rolling Thunder occured after delays. -

The United states tried to end fighting by offering North Vietnam aid in exchange for peace. When the offer was rejected President Johnson made sure to raise combat strength in Vietnam. -

Nixon
Richard Nixon took office after winning the election in November. The significance of this election was that Nixon promised "Peace with honor" in Vietnam to the American people. -

When the leader of communist Vietnam died from heart failure, it caused confusion on what was going to play out in the rest of the war. -
Protests
Although there had been countless protests against the Vietnam war, this protest held in November was the most significant since it is known as the largest anti-war demonstration in United States history. -
Peace in Paris
After much fighting in Vietnam the thought of peace finally came when meetings were held in Paris to try and achieve peace. -
Cease Fire
After many years of combat, the parties involved in the war finally signed a cease fire agreement and began uniting the nation once again. -
Homecoming
After the cease fire was signed troops began getting pulled out of Vietnam to return home. On this day the last of the troops left the war zone. This return had mixed reactions since the troops were not welcomed back kindly by many. -
Nixon Resigns
When Nixon resigned South Vietnam was left without their strongest advocate and began losing to the communists. -
Surrender
Due to the lack of support the South had no choice but to surrender to the north and defeats the reason the United States got involved. -
Socialist Republic
After the South surrendered the country began to become unified again and in July they officially became the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, a communist country.
