Eisenhower Cites the Domino Theory
"Eisenhower cites the domino Theory on April 7,1954. He Governed much of U.S Foreign Policy. It began in the early 1950’s. The U.S used this theory to justify its support to a non-communist regime in South Vietnam against the communist government of North Vietnam War." -
Indochina War
The Indochina war was December 19, 1964. The French were soon at war because they did not realize that Vietnam was now free and independent. “The U.S. wanted to help the French so they gave them money and ammo to their war efforts. Ho’s powers were gained and France’s powers were dwindling.” After 56-days The French eventually surrendered at Dienbienphu. -
Campaign of terror against villages controlled by Diem
Campaign of terror against villages controlled by Diem in 1959. Under the resulting Geneva Accords, Vietnam was separated into two separate states, North and South Vietnam. Minh lead North Vietnam and had the capitol of Hanoi. Diem lead South Vietnam and had the capitol city of Saigon. The election were blocked by Diem leaving South Vietnam opposing him. An arms revolt was launched. -

"Vietcong Formed was formed December 20,1960 The Viet Cong was the military arm of the National Liberation Front." at the end of 1960 it was established. it was created to escalate the armed struggle in South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese created it. In the early 60’s it grew rapidly. -

U.S. begins using Agent Orange in January 13, 1962. The U.S. used agent orange to clear the jungle grounds to be able to make it easie to seee what was going on in the jungles."It was one of the so called ‘Rainbow Herbicides.’ Six million gallons were used in Vietnam." -

"Reports stated that North Vietnamese sailors launched a n attack on American destroyers off the coast of North Vietnam on August 2, 1964(The Gulf of Tonkin) although details were sketchy President Johnson was eager to act and announced that U.S. forces would stage air strikes over Vietnam. U.S. involvement escalated quickly." -
U.S. Arial Bombing
"U.S. Arial Bombing- Operation Rolling Thunder- March 2, 1965. This was a name given to Americans sustained bombing campaign against North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. This was a demonstration of American’s near total air supremacy during the war. Operation Rolling Thunder failed on both accounts." -
First U.S. ground troops sent to Vietnam
U.S. leaders realized that plans fro commitment must be made after eight people died because of an attack on the American base. Johnson ordered 3,500 soldiers to be sent to Vietnam in 1965 to protect an air base in Da Nang. Johnson ordered offensive action not long after. There were 50,000 troops in Vietnam within 6 weeks. There were 184,000 men by the end of the year. -
Tet Offensive
"Tet offensive- On January 31, 1968, some 70,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched the Tet Offensive, (named for the lunar new year holiday called Tet). Tet was a coordinated series of fierce attacks on more than 100 cities and towns in South Vietnam. North Vietnam achieved a huge victory with the Tet Offensive. This offense caused a turning point in the Vietnam War, and a slow withdrawal of Americans from the region." -
Policy of Vietnamization announced
"Policy of Vietnamization was announced on November 3,1969." Richard Nixon took office in 1969. After taking office he announced a new policy called Vietnamization. Vietnamization was created to end American involvement in the Vietnam War. "This would happen by transferring all military responsibilities to South Vietnam. In 1973, the U.S. negotiated a treaty with the North Vietnamese, and withdrew American combat troops and declared the Vietnamization process complete." -
Kent State Incident
A National Guard fired into a crowed of Kent State University demonstrators on May 4,1970 at Kent State University. Four students were killed and nine were wounded. The event caused a nationwide student strike. The strikes caused hundreds of universities and colleges to close. -
Watergate Scandal
Five men were caught and arrested on June 17, 1972 for breaking into the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate Building in Washington DC. The president at the time was Richard Nixon and people say that he knew about this robbery and that the robbers were connected too Nixon’s reelection campaign. Nixon tried to cover this up with “hush-money” that he gave to the burglars. -
U.S. troops withdraw from Vietnam
"The peace talks then resumed, and on January 27, 1973 the parties agreed to a cease-fire the following day, the withdrawal of all U.S. forces, the release of all prisoners of war, and the creation of an international force to keep the peace. The South Vietnamese were to have the right to determine their own future, but North Vietnamese troops stationed in the south could remain. By the end of 1973, almost all U.S. military personnel had left South Vietnam." -
