  • The Begining of Conflict

    The Vietnam War original began when the Vietnamese attack the French on August 1945 so they could earn their independence. The U.S. only joined to stop the spread of communism so they joined and tried to help France stay in the fight.
  • Eisenhower Cites the Domino Theory

    On April 7,1954 President Eisenhower gave a speech over his idea called the Domino Theory “You have a row of dominoes set up. You knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly.”
  • Indochina War

    For 8 years the U.S. helped France stay in the war. But the French finally surrendered after a 56-day battle at Dienbienphu, on September 2, 1954. When the French pulled they left the U.S. and South Vietnam (S.V.).
  • Campain of Terror Against Villages Controlled by Deim

    The Governor of South Vietnam was a man called Ngo Dinh Diem who ruled with a iron fist and terrorized those who challenged him by killing them or putting them in jail. The U.S. had pledged to support him on 1959
  • Vietcong Formed

    The Vietcong were formed sometime during 1960 but they grew in strength cause of Diem’s iron fist ruling in South Vietnam Vietcong were supplied by North Vietnam to do hit-and-runs on South Vietnam, and the U.S. they used Guerilla fighting
  • U.S. Military Begins Using Agent Orange

    In 1962 the U.S. used a deadly chemical called Agent Orange which killed everything it touched leaving nothing left, but if it got on a person it would lead to many kinds of cancer and lead to birth defects on the local Vietnamese.
  • Gulf of Tankin

    On August 1964 North Vietnamese had supposedly sunk U.S. Destroyers. The report could have been made up to draw the U.S. further in Vietnam
  • U.S. Arial Bombing - Operation rolling Thunder

    On March 2 1965 a strategic bombing by U.S. aircraft attacked targets through out North Vietnam. This was intended to put military pressure on North Vietnam’s Communist leaders. Operation Rolling Thunder marked the first sustained American assault on North Vietnamese territory.
  • First U.S. ground troops sent to Vietnam

    On March 8, 1965, 3,500 U.S. Marines landed near Da Nang in South Vietnam. President Johnson had ordered this deployment to provide protection for the important U.S. airbase there.
  • Tet Offensive

    On January 31, 1968, some 70,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched the Tet Offensive. This was coordinated series of fierce attacks on more than 100 cities and towns in South Vietnam.
  • Policy of "Vietnamization" Announced

    On November 3, 1969 Richard Nixon introduced a new strategy called Vietnamization that was aimed at ending American involvement in the Vietnam War by transferring all military responsibilities to South Vietnam.
  • Kent State Incident

    On May 4, l970 members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State University demonstrators, killing four and wounding nine Kent State students. The event triggered a nationwide student strike that forced hundreds of colleges and universities to close.
  • Watergate scandle

    June 17, 1972 several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee located in the Watergate building in Washington, D.C. these burglars were hired by Nixon’s reelection comity to spy on the democratic party.
  • U.S. troops withdraw from Vietnam

    January 1973 25,000 soldiers withdrew in the first stage. There were 14 more removal stages. The last U.S. troops didn’t leave until the Paris Peace Acoords were signed.
