Geneva Accords signed
Once the Geneva Accords was signed, it ended the French Indochina War. It also split Vietnam into two parts along the 17th parallel. The North was controled by the communist ruler Ho Chi Minh and the South was democratic led by Ngo Diem. -
Operation Rolling Thunder begins
President Johnson approves Operation Rolling Thunder on February 13 1965. The first time US fires on the Rebulic of Vietnam Air Force is on March 2 1965 and last until October 1968. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
President Johnson signed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. It gave the President authorization to use military forces in Southeast Asia without a declaration of war. -
Tet Offensive
Vietcong troops surprised the US on the Buddhist Holiday, Tet. This is a turning point in the War. -
My Lai Massacre
American soldiers fired and killed 300 to 500 women and children in tiny hamlet of My Lai. This event was kept a serect for about a year before in became known to the public. -
Pentagon Papers printed in NY
These papers revealed that statments released about military situation in Vietnam wer not true. This includes the statement about the start of war. -
Fall of Saigon
Communism took over all of Vietnam when the North captured the capital city of the South, Saigon. This basically ended the Vietnam War.
