Split of Korea
Korea was split in two, geographically along the 38th parallel August 10th, 1945. North Korea was established as a communist state and created ties with China, as South Korea was not necessarily democratic, but most definitely anti-communist. South Korea created ties with the U.S. -
The Iron Curtain
The definition of the Iron Curtain would be the defining line between Communist countries of the Soviet Union and the Anti-Communist countries that were housed by NATO. This created a geographical definition that also identified the tension of the two defense systems. -
Truman Doctrine
Harry S. Truman announced his pledge to the United States that there would be no spread of communism in the U.S.
He used the term "containment," which meant to contain communism in Europe, but to supply aide in areas of the world threatened my communsim. This relieved Americans of their paranoia of communistic corruption. -
Establishment of the Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was a program established for post-WW2 rebuild. The plan was intended to restore the European economy, cease the spread of Communism, as well as restore the areas in which were affected by the war. -
The Berlin Blockade/ Airlift
Due to the fact that the Soviet Union decided to close it's borders from other allies to supply food/goods, the United States and England initiated an air-drop of supplies and food to the Soviet Union for about a year. They did this to show the S.U. how foolish they looked, creating a divide. -
Development of NATO
NATO, the development of allies and mututal defense. Formed in 1949 to protect all areas of the divide in Germany, Canada and the United States. If one of any of the several areas were attacked, all would be involve in a refute. -
The Korean War
The Korean War begins in 1950 and ends in 1953, as a fight between the North and South. This eventually involved the United States -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was essentially a copy of NATO, only defending all Soviet Union designated areas-- Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. This was known as an act of retaliation, and political divide with the NATO members. -
Little Rock Nine
The Little Rock Nine were the first African American students to be integrated in all-white schools. These nine kids were escorted by U.S. soldiers and were the first of many African Americans to graduate. -
Launch of Sputnik 1
The launch of Sputknik 1 was the inital experiment of satellite launches, produced by the Soviet Union. This also initiated the Space Race, as it frightened the United States. The U.S. was in fear that this satellite could potentially contain missles if successful. -
Sputnik II launches
Sputnik II was the Soviet Union's second test run on satellite launches, but this time, the first living species was carried into space with it- Laika, a Russian dog. Unfortunately, Laika did pass away in space. -
Launch of Explorer 1
Explorer 1 was the first American satellite, launched into space. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
JFK initiated an attack to overthrow new leader of Cuba, Fidel Castro. The poorly executed mission was one of the biggest failures in U.S. history. -
U-2
An American spy plane, named U-2 flew over the Soviet Union to photograph ICBM sites for the CIA. U-2 was shot down, but the pilot was alive and U-2 was mostly intact. This eventually lead to a meeting to discuss control of nuclear arms. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was essentially the product of the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion. This was the closest time that the U.S. came to a nuclear war, but fortunately did not.
