Domino Theory
President Eisenhower introduces the "Domino Theory." He explains the theory using the example of dominos. He said, "You have a row of dominoes set up. You knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly." He was talking about how if Vietnam becomes a certain religion so will the other parts of the world and he thinks that is a bad thing. So we would be falling like dominos. -
Start Of War
The Veitnamese were in the French's land for a battle. The French commander told them to stop shooting. The battle had been going on for 55 days. The Viet Minh had 8,000 dead and 12,000 hurt. But the Vietnamese victory destroyed the French's hope to outlong the war. -
Vietman is Split
The French general, Henri Delteil and the Vietnam General Ta Quang Buu, make an agreement that says the country of Vietnam will be split into two seperate sections. A line will be drawn at the 17th parallel, which will be the division line. Vietnam will stay like that until the elections in 1956. The US and the governament of Bao Dai so not agree with this conclusion. -
Viet Cong is Formed
Haino makes the National Liberation Front and Deim dubs them Vietcong. This is all for South Vietnam. -
Kennedy Elected
John F. Kennedy defeats Richard Nixon just by a little bit. JFK says that,we can "...bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." -
Ap Bac Battle
During the battle of Ap Bac the Vietcong defeat the South Vietnamese army (A. R. V. N.) -
Kennedy is Assassinated
JFK is assassinated. Now, his vice persident has to deal with Vietnam and figure out what to do. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
It was a large bombing campaign. We bombed North Vietnam for about three years. -
General Westmoreland
General Westmoreland launches a plan and gains the US land northwest of Saigon. -
Operation Crimp
This is the largest US plan of the whole war. We deployed about 8,000 troops to gain power over Saigon, which we thought was located near Chu Chin but we failed to find anyone. -
Operation Linebacker Two
This lasts for about twelve days. During the event we bomb the North Vietnamese and the US aircraft uses more than 20,000 tons of bombs in this experiance. The North Vietnamese and the US lose many of their soldiers in this battle -
Peacetalk
The peacetalk resumes in Paris and it was where the North Vietnamese and the US had talks about making peace during the war -
No more fire!
Henry Kissenger, a person of the Vietnamese, signs a document that say they will stop firing. -
Nixon resigns
President Richard Nixon says that he wants to stop the war and he leaves Vietnam with their strongest advocate. -
End Of War
This was the end of the war. At 8:30 am we left Saigon. At 11 am the Viet Cong flag is flying high in the sky. Presisdent Minh surrenders because he realizes that the war is not going to be short, no one is going to win soon. So now the war is over!
