The Geneva Accords was the resolution to the Frenh Indochina war and temporarily divided Vietnam on the 17th Parallel. The North was ruled by Ho Chi Min who was a communist and the South, Ngo Dinh Diem. Ngo Dinh Diem was appointed by the U.S. because they were afraid of communism spreading to the south.
