Search and Destroy Missions were determained on how many enemy forces were killed and not by how much land was taken. Then leave immediately after the battle was over. The helicopter helped American forces get in and out of the battle area fast. Once the American forces left the battle area the Vietcong could come back and reclaim the land. -

Tonkin Resolution
The Tokin Gulf resolution happended when a North Korean sub launched torpedos at American ships. The ships were said that they did not provocke the torpedo boats. This gave the president the right to use military force to deal with problems with out having to declare war on anyone. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
Operation Rolling Thunder was a stratigic bombing event that was designed to put pressure on North Koreas military leaders. Operation Rolling Thunder marked the first American assault on North Vietnamese territory. -
US jets bomb Ho Chi Minh Trail
More than 30 US Air Force jets striked the Ho chi Minh Trail in hopes of destroying the North Vietnams way of getting supplies to its troops. Once the jets dropped their bombs workers of the North Vietnams army worked fast to make other ways to get back on the trail. -
US Troops arive in Vietnam
The first deployment of US troops arive in Vietnam. These troops were listed as combat troops. There were over 100,000 troops in vietnam. -
Operation Starlite
A deserter from the Vietcong Army told American army commanders that there was a plan to attack the Marine bas at Chu Lai. This was one of the first American Battles in the Vietnam War. -
Landing Zone X-Ray
This was a battle that took place in the la Drang Valley. The la Drang Valley was one of the most hostil area in all of Vietnam. A battalion from the 1st Calvalry Divison was ambushed by an North Vietnamese regiment. -
Battle of Khe Sahn
The battle took place in the Quang Tri Province of Vietnam. The base only consist of Marines and navy medics. The battle lasted for over 7 months. The Vietcong attacked the base daily with artillary and on ground assults. -
Tet Offensive
The Tet Offensive was a military campaige launched by the veit cong. It was a surprise attack on the American militray units, because Tet was supposed to be a 2 day cease fire because of celevbration for the North and South. -
My Lai Massacre
A platoon of American soldier killed between 200 and 500 civilians in the village of My Lai. The soldiers that had been in the area were told that the people in My Lai could be considered to be VC soldiers. There were 14 officers were supposed to be sentenced to life imprisonment but most of them got and early out. -
Troops in Vietnam
The number of US troops in Vietnam during 1968 hit 540,000. 1968 was one of the worst years in the war for the American people. Due to the fact that many soldiers were lost during this year. -
Battle for Hamburger Hill
The battle for the hill took 10 days and there were 10 assults to capture the hill. The Hill 937 was named "Hamburger Hill" because of all the casualtys that took place. It reminded the troops of a meat grinder. -

Vietnamization was something President Nixon thought of that would end American involvement in the Vietnam War. The US had to help train the South Vietnam soldiers and once they thought they were ready the US left. The South latter fell to the north. -
Kent State
There was a protest on the campus of Kent State because President Richard Nixon sent troops to Cambodia. This sparked protests around the country. Protestors set fire to an ROTC building and thats when the governor of Ohio sent 900 national guard to the school. -
26th Amendment
The 26th Amendment is about lowering the voting age from 21 to 18. The Amendment was being looked at during World War 2 but wasn't passed till the Vietnam War. -
US withdrawl from Vietnam
The military forces of the United States began to leave Vietnam when a peace agreement was signed and the following morning there was a cease fire and within 60 days all US forces were out of Vietnam -

A resolution that congress that stated that the president can send troops into action. Only by the authorization of Congress or if the United States is under attack. -
Surrender of South Vietnam
The acting president of South Vietnam at that time thought he could nagotiate with the North but he could not and that led to the surrender of Sigon and the surrender of South Vietnam
