President Nixon announces Vietnam peace offer. troops begin recedig in June. -
1969
President of Vietnam Dies. Collective leadership is chosen. More U.S. troops pull back. -
1972
Nixon responds to North Vietnamese drive across DMZ by ordering mining of North Vietnam ports and heavy bombing of Hanoi-Haiphong area. Nixon then orders "Christmas Bombing" to bring Vietnamese back into the fight. -
1976
Election of National Assembly paves way for reunification of North and South in Vietnam
