  • Ngo Dinh Dien Assassination

    Ngo Dinh Dien Assassination
    He was murdered with his brother during a coup by generals in the South Vietnamese army. Diem wasn't that popular especially with the Buddahiats. Many people in Saigon rejoiced at his death.
  • LBJ Sworn in as President

    LBJ Sworn in as President
    LBJ was sworn in as the 36th President just hours after JFK was assassinated. He took his oath on Air Force One in the Dallas airport.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    Gave approval for expansion of Vietnam war. LBJ feared that the public would not support an expansion of the war.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    Operation Rolling Thunder
    A strategic bombing campaign in which U.S. military aircrafts attacked targets throughout North Vietnam. Intended to put military pressure on their communist leaders.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    The word "Tet" is named for the lunar new year holiday. More than 100 towns and cities in South Vietnam were attacked.
  • My Lai Massacre

    My Lai Massacre
    American soldiers killed the majority of the population of the South Vietnamese of My Lai. About 500 children, women, and elderly people were killed.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination

    Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination
    He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. He had led the civil rights movement since the mid-1500's. Spoke out for blacks and their rights and a very important person.
  • Richard Nixon Elected as President (1st time)

    Richard Nixon Elected as President (1st time)
    Richard Nixon defeats Vice President Hubert Humphrey by less than 500,000 votes. He promised to find a way to "peace with honor" in Vietnam.
  • Kent State University Protest

    Kent State University Protest
    On the invasion of Cambodiaby the U.S. they needed to draft 1500,000 more soldiers for expansion. That provoked protest on campuses across the country and in Kent State University they set fire to the ROTC building.
  • Armistice Signed to end Vietnam War

    Armistice Signed to end Vietnam War
    After three years of a long and frustrating war the U.S, China, North Korea, and South Korea agree to sign an armistice.
  • The War Powers Act

    The War Powers Act
    Makes it so that the President, upon sending troops into military action, must let the congress know within 48 hours that he sent them.
  • Fall of Saigon

    Fall of Saigon
    Marked the end of the Vietnam War. The city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City after the late president Ho Chi Minh.
