    December 20, 1960 The National Liberation Front (NLF), or Viet Cong, is established in South Vietnam. This group was set up to spread the non communist beliefs a democracy.
  • Tonkin Resolution

    Tonkin Resolution
    August 7, 1964 Gave President Lyndon Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by congress for use of military powers in Southeast Asia. This was the response of America to North Vietnam who torpedoed the destroyer USS Maddox.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    1965 -- 1968 Repeated bombing on north Vietnam. They targeted the Vietnamese’s roads, industrial plants, and air bases this was also an attempt to decrease North Vietnam morale.

    February 21, 1967 This was one of the largest air-mobile assaults ever, 240 helicopters to sweep over Tay Ninh province. The goal was to destroy Vietcong bases and the Vietcong military headquarters north of Saigon.

    March16, 1968 Mass murder of between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam. This was done by Untied States Army Soldiers of Charlie company.

    April 30, 1970 President Nixon announces that U.S. Will attack enemy locations in neighboring country Cambodia. This news sparked nationwide protests mostly at colleges.

    May 4, 1970 Kent State University in Kent Ohio students protesting against American invasion of Cambodia. Guards man of Ohio National Guard fired rounds into crowd killing 4 students and wounding 9 others.
  • 26th Amendment

    July 1st 1971 limited the voting age of US to 18. They made this in response to the students activism to the Vietnam War.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    Paris Peace Accords
    January 27, 1973 Was intended to establish peace in Vietnam and end the Vietnam war. Neither side really obeyed by it and eventually North Vietnam captured the south.
  • War Powers Act

    War Powers Act
    November 7, 1973 Joint resolution concerning the war powers of Congress and the President. This is where president can put troops into invade places and then must tell congress within 48 hours of it and if congress doesn't pass they must pull troops out within 60-90 days.
  • Resigns

    1974 Nixon resigns as president which leaves South Vietnam without its advocate. He resigned because he knew he would probably get impeached because of the Watergate scandal.
  • South Vietnam Surrender

    South Vietnam Surrender
    April 30, 1975 What was left of the US officials and personal were all evacuated with the largest helicopter rescue operation in history to help get them and South Vietnamese personal associated with the south's regime. The North met little resistance as they stormed into Saigon later renamed Ho Chi Minh after there leader and Vietnam became one country again under Communism again.

    November 13, 1982 Vietnam memorial is dedicated in Washington DC. There are currently 58,272 names on the wall and approximately 1200 are MIA's POW and others.
