In this letter, Forbes writes to his father about not receiving any letters from home in two weeks. Then he talks about how many people are being put in hospitals due to sickness. Due to the spread of sickness, he will not be able to travel back home for another few months. -
Arrival at camp
his letter to his father says where he is located, and talks about the scenery. As he traveled over four hundred miles he says it was tiresome because of 40 men in a cattle car. Upon arrival, he informed that some of the men in the camp had been up to the front. Not going into detail about how the war was going but giving some insight. Concluding his letter with “this is the last letter from this place” as they are being split up he requests to work near the lines. -
Travel
He writes his father, letting him know about his arrival in Nancy. He says he's been traveling constantly. He talks about all the things he’s seen and all the people he has met. He ends the letter by talking about how they are not yet done traveling and his experiences along the way. -
updates
Since his last letter, he located some men from back home. He says it will be over 6 months till he leaves as they are still taking care of the sick men. Since he last wrote he had been up on the battlefields on two separate occasions. First taking pairs of field shoes up, and second pioneer regiment. He ends the letter by saying he will tell more about his time when he returns home and asking his father to have his family write more often. -
Spending the new year in France
No idea when they can return home. Forbes says “Things looked much better 3 months ago than they do now”. They are now in France and will be staying for a while, bridges have been blown down by the Germans. American men were not able to cross the water (the Great Hill), at the beginning of the war French tried to cross but didn't have success, with 30,000 men lost in under 15 minutes. Later in the letter he talks about a parade on the 25th of April back home, and he wishes he could be there. -
