Valerie's Human Capital

    Valerie babysat for 5 families in her neighborhood, which made her realize she enjoyed working with children. She gained communication skills while she babysat. During the summer, she worked as a lifeguard at her local community pool. She became certified in CPR, First Aid, taught swim lessons and coached the swim team.

    When Valerie was in high school, she decided to take a child development class. Valerie gained social skills and communication skills.
  • High School

    Valerie conducted story hour for toddlers and preschoolers once a month at the local library as a part of her child development class.
  • High School

    Valerie joined a student organization where she helped create community service projects and fundraisers. This experience helped her develop her organization and ability to work with people. Her involvement gave her the opportunity to attend leadership trainings which were not only fun, but enhanced her leadership skills.
  • College

    Valerie decided to pursue a degree in athletic training. During college, she participated in intramural sports and used her fundraising experience to raise money for juvenile athletic foundations- a cause she was very passionate about.

    In her senior year of high school, Valerie was glad she took time to become a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) because she was able to continue this during college.
  • Work Life after College

    After graduating college, she began searching for jobs. Her education and experiences as a babysitter, lifeguard, and CNA made her a perfect candidate for a position at a hospital.
  • Work Life after College

    Valerie worked with seven different high school athletic programs evaluating athletes and developing training programs. Valerie made trainings a priority because staying up to date with changes in her field was important. Soon, she started a family. After her second child was born, Valerie decided to start working part-time so she could stay home with her children. Her certification in massage therapy allowed her to have a flexible part-time schedule doing massages for only two days a week.
