The Saints arrive in the Salt Lake Valley. A few days later Brigham Young names the area Desert.

Utah submitted its first petition for statehood. The years leading up the the civil war were a difficult time. Issues such as the slavery question were a factor because bringing a new state in could upset the balance of the current situation of the US. Utah did not have a very large population at the time and this was also an issue. This was the first of six attempts.

Compromise which helped to put off the Civil War for several more years. Utah was admitted as a territory into the Union and was allowed to decide under popular sovereignty if they would allow slavery.

Utah was rejected a second time. This time the main issues were the "twin relics of barbarism- polygamy and slavery"

Several people, mainly Drummond made accusations against Utah and President Buchanan sent over 2,000 troops to Utah to see what was going on. It wasn't necessary to send all those men.

There was a lot of immigration during the entire time Utah was trying to become a state. Between 1840 and 1900 there were over 80,000 converts came to the United States and most of them also came to Utah.

The mining community petitioned for a seperate governement when Comstock Lode was discovered. They said they were seperated by the Great Salt Lake andhundreds of miles of desert and they were being unjustly represented.

In response to the mining peoples complaints the Nevada Territory was created.

Congress did not want Mormons to be able to practice polygamy so they passed the Morril Act which made bigamy illegeal in the United States.

House Speaker visited Utah for several weeks and told them that they would not be able to achieve statehood until polygamy was ended.

Formed to oppose the domiant political party which was pretty much all the Mormons. They tried many times to win local elections but oftentimes failed as the majority always voted with the Mormons.

The People's Party was all the Mormons and they created their own party in response to the Liberal Party that was created to oppose them. They always won cause everyone was Mormon.

President Wilfred Woodruff realeased the Manifesto lifting the practice of plural marriage for church members. After this time no more plural marriages were preformed.

Mormon's were excited to share about themselves in the World fair. They wanted to exhibit themselves and be bale to show people who they were in ther quest for becoming a state.

Mormons establishing themselves into the two party system, democrat and republican. Later they chose a Republican governor, US representative, senate, and legislature.

After an almost 50 year battle Utah is accepted as the 45th state of the United States of America.
