The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints
Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, organized said church on 6 April 1830. -
Winter Quarters, Nebraska
The people who were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were forced out of their homes in Nauvoo, Illinois in 1847. Tehey left Nauvoo and travelled to Winter Quarters, Nebraska where they waited out the winter before travelling on to the Utah Valley. -
Entering the Salt Lake Valley
The first group of Mormon Pioneers, led by Brigham Young. entered the Salt Lake Valley. They came to Utah to escape religious persecution. -
Seagull Victory!
When the Mormon Pioneers first settled in Utah, they planted crops. However, late in the season, crickets overran the crops and began eating them. The insects would have destroyed the crops except for the fact that thousands of seagulls came and rescued the crops by eating the insects. -
Mountain Meadows Massacre
Mountain Meadows MassacreMormon militia living in Southern Utah attacked and killed a group of emigrants, totaling approximately 120 men, women, and children for no reason. -
Willie and Martin Handcart Companies
Many travellers did not have money to purchase oxen and wagons. They built handcarts adn pushed or pulled their belongings while walking to Utah after emigrating from Europe. Some of these individuals left too late in the year and ran into bad weather. They were miraculously rescued by the settlers of the Salt Lake Valley. -
The Last Spike
In May 1869, the last rail was laid to connect the first transcontinental railroad. The railroad was completed in Promontory Summit, Utah. -
Brigham Young
Brigham Young, considered by many to be a modern Moses, died on August 28, 1877 at age 76 in Salt Lake City, Utah. -
Utah Statehood
Utah was admitted as teh 45th state to the Union on January 4, 1896.
