Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was when the United States purchased a portion of North America that was previously owned by France. The territory included Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska as well as parts of Minnesota, Louisiana, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, Montana and Canada. It was first only going to be the purchase of New Orleans and the area around it, but they were offered more land for only 15 million dollars. -
New Orleans
New Orleans was the main cause of the Louisiana Purchase. Initially, the American representatives were there to obtain only New Orleans. The city had control of the Mississippi River which was of major importance because the United States wanted control of the Mississippi River for shipping goods throughout the west of the Appalachian Mountains. Not only that, but New Orleans had a prosperous port that America wished to control. -
Ports in New Orleans
When Louisiana had been purchased, the key point was to take control of the ports in New Orleans. The ports were a center for trade and they can be considered some of the most important and most busy ports in America. They are used for everything from trading to docks for cruise ships. Cruise ships often stopped at or sailed from New Orleans as it was a flourishing city. Cruises were an important part of New Orleans ports. -
Titanic Sails
The Titanic was a British Passenger Cruise line that was sailing from London Ports to New York City. The ship was the first of it’s kind, being the largest ship sailing at it’s time. It was also modern in different ways such as in the design and the new technologies that it used. -
Titanic Sinking
The Titanic sank on this date, in the early morning after colliding with a large iceberg during the voyage to New York. The ship was about 400 miles from Canada when the tragedy struck. On board, there was 2,200 people before the sinking and there had only been less than 700 survivors. The ship sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and since then, parts of the boat and items from passengers have been found. -
Robert Ballard
After doing two missions in the Navy, Robert Ballard used the resources given to him to search the sea floor for two submarines. He and the team realized that the two submarines had imploded because of immense pressure. They then searched for debris from the Titanic. They sighted debris following until the discoved the boiler and eventually the hull of the ship. He now was known for discovering parts of the Titanic.
