Tensions between the North and South states over slavery, states' rights, and expansion. Broke out in a war between the Union and Confederate states. -
Civil War Ends
The Confederate states surrendered, and the Union emancipated the slaves of Texas. This resulted in Juneteenth, the day the Union emancipated the slaves. -
Reconstruction Ends
The reconstruction began after the Civil War ended; this reconstruction included various tensions in reintegrating the Southern states. Tensions between African Americans and whites, as well as states' rights. It ends with the Compromise of 1877. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
The U.S. Supreme Court case ruled that "separate but equal" with segregation not violating the 14th Amendment.
