Establish the Relationship
US and Pakistan start developing a relationship. The US was one of the first coutries to have a reationship with Pakistan since they broke away from India. Since then, Pakistan has been relying on the US for support. -
Signing of the Mutual Defense Agreement
The US was concerned about the Soviet Union expanding and Pakistan needed security assistance against threats from India, so the two countries signed a mutual defense agreement. The US sent a total of $508 million in military aid to Pakistan. It was important for the US to form an alliance because Pakistan is situated close to the Soviet Union. This would allow the US to keep a close eye on them and prevent the spread of communism. -
War in India and China
The US offered help to India in this war in hopes of creating some sort of relationship with them. This of course made Pakistan mad since they too were not on good terms with India. JFK promised to tell Pakistan if they would give more aid to India; however, they gave aid without telling the president of Pakistan which made him them more upset. The situation offended Pakistan and weaked its ties with the US. -
Reagan's Operation Cyclone
Ronald Reagan wanted to arm, train, and finance the Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. The program supported military Islamic groups that were favored by Pakistan. The US used Pakistan as a transit country for aid to Afghanistan. It's ironic because we trained the mujahideen fighters who are threatening our country today. -
Pressler Amendment
The amendment banned most economic and military assistance to Pakistan unless the President certified that "Pakistan did not possess a nuclear device of any kind." The president continues to say they don't have any nuclear weapons, so the US continues to send aid. -
Aid Suspended
Pakistan started experimenting with nuclear weapons again, so the US suspended aid to Pakistan due to the rules in the Pressler Amendment. All military and most of the economic aid was stopped, the US also stopped deliveries of military equipment. -
US Sanctions Pakistan
Pakistan starts nuclear tests and declares themselves an all out nuclear-weapons states. The US then sanctioned their military sales, economic assistance, and loans to the government. The US also didn't deliver an airplane that Pakistan was supposed to get because the nuclear testing broke the Pressler Amendment. -
9/11
After the terroist attack on the World Trade Center, Pakistan's president offered his full assistance in fighting the war on terror. He also agreed to help remove the Taliban from Afghanistan to help out the US. The US then sent more aid in order for them to help us fight. -
A.Q.Khan Nuclear Crimes
Khan is the founder of Pakistan's nucelar program, and in 2004 he admitted to supplying nuclear-weapons technology to Iran, Libya, and North Korea. Because of this, the United States wanted him arrested but had to settle for him being put on house arrest. This weakened Pakistan's ties with the US because of the lack of trust. -
Earthquake in Kashmir
After the earthquake in Kashmir, the US immediately sent help including, $510 million for earthquake relief and reconstruction, humanitarian aid, and military support. This shows that no matter what has happened in the past, the US and Pakistan still have a strong relationship. -
AFPAK Strategy
President Obama wanted to start focusing less on the war in Iraq, and more on the war in Afghanistan. In order to do this he started the Afghanistan-Pakistan Strategy which states it will: "disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al-Qaeda and its safe havens in Pakistan, and prevent their return to Pakistan or Afghanistan." -
Car Bomb in Times Square
The car bomb in Times Square was found to be set up by a Pakistani in the US. Hillary Clinton threatened Pakistan saying that if a terrist attack was ever traced back to Pakistan, they would face severe consequences. That made Pakistan have to step it up with their efforts in fighting the war on terror.
