boxer rebellion
Boxer Rebellion November 1, 1899
In an effort to stop corruption of Chinese society and foreign control, secret Chinese Societies were formed. Westerners called on one group The Society of Harmonious Fists and renamed the Boxer Rebellion to destroy both the “foreign devils” and their Chinese Christian converts.Supported by some Chinese troops, the Boxer Rebellion killed more than 200 foriegners and took others as prisoners. A large international force was formed to smash the rebellion. -

work began to build the Canal in 1903 (1901-U.S. acquired the exclusive right to build) Theodore Roosevelt and others believed that having a canal through Central America was vital to American Power in the world because it would save time and money for both the commercial and military shipping. Roosevelt believed that displaying American Power would make nations think twice about fighting and promote peace. -

“Cuba, you are free as long as you do as the United States says.” The Cubans had prepared a new constitution for their country with United States conditions. This amendment is named after Senator Orville Platt who submitted the stipulations:1.Cuba could not make any treaty with other nations that would weaken its independence.2. Cuba had to allow the U.S. to buy or lease naval stations in Cuba.3.Cuba was to keep their debt low.4.U.S. had the right to intervene. -
