The U.S.A. buys Alaska from Russia A.K.A. "Seward's Icebox"
The United States of America buy Alaska from the Russians at a price of 2 cents an acre. The final price was 2.7 million dollars. The reason it is sometimes called "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox" is because when Seward purchased it, Alaska looked like a big frozen block of ice until they found gold in the Klondike on August 16, 1896. It was also called Johnson's Polar Bear Garden. -

Gold was discoverd in Alaska by Dawson Charlie, Shookum Jim Mason, and George Carmack. Not much gold was found after the first discovery, so this rush ended quickly. -
Alaska Second Organic Act
The Second Organic Act conferred territorial status to Alaska. Alaska was allowed to have an elected legislature of 8 senators and 16 house members. -
Constitution for Alaskans is ratified
The Alaskans created a constitution for themselves so that they were able to govern themselves with help from the United States of America until they had been granted statehood. -
Alaska is granted statehood
About 100 years ago the U.S. bought Alaska for 7.2 million dollars. When people started to move into Alaska in the late 1800's, the U.S. decided to make it a state after lots of consideration.
