Immigration
The Unites States reached its peak of immigration in 1880. Thousands of europeans came to the New World including Irish and German people; but some even came from Asia. New complexions, new languages and new religions added to the diversity of the US. At this point, people out of pleasure to find new opportunities. However, there was some resistance to the new immigrants.

Chinese Exclusion Act
The US congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act which prohibited all immigration of Chinese laborers. Soon the entire ethnic group was erased from the US.

Industrialization and Organized Labor
While America faced industrialization, it's economy doubled in size. It all began with new transportation methods such s the railroad that allowed businesses to expand. Therefore it left a few individuals at the top controlling the economy. Laborers experienced terrible conditions, children were exposed to work in factories at the age of 8. They worked 6 days a week and 8 hours a day.

Spanish American War

US Imperialism
In the 20th century, the United States grew and claimed control as a world power. Industrialists sought new territories overseas for cheaper sources. It expanded its territory from the Philippines, the Caribbean, Europe etc. http://www.ushistory.org/us/44.asp -
World War 1
World War 1 also known as the Great War originated in Europe and lasted from 1914 to 1918. The assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand sparked the war. The worlds greatest economic powers split into two alliances (triple alliance and the triple entente). By the end of the war borders were redrawn and independent nations were created. It caused severe casualties.

League of Nations
The league of nations was an international organization that was created after World War 1 to provide a conference to resolve disputes among countries. People had hope that the league of nations would put the world in a better position after the turmoil caused by the Treaty of Versailles.

The Great Depression
The Great Depression began in the United States after the stock market crashed in 1929. People were panicked to lose everything they had. It caused higher numbers of unemployment and crime rates. It was the greatest economic crisis in history.

The New Deal
The New Deal was a series of plans to aid the unemployed, begin housing initiatives, fixing banks and stock markets. These programs were in response to the Great Depression. It was based on relief, recovery and reform. It sparked a revolution among the American public under Roosevelt's reign.

The Holocaust
The Holocaust was a persecution of European Jews by Nazi Germany between 1933-1945. It was an organized genocide by Adolf Hitler Nazi Germany which killed six million jews. Discrimination targeted Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Soviet prisoners of war, the mentally disabled, and Poles. The people were placed in concentration camps and were put in severe situations that were unlivable.

World War 2
World War 2 was a global war that included the great powers who formed military alliances: Axis and Allies. WW2 was also known for the advanced technologies used. Major events of World War 2 include: "Rape of Nanking" when Japan invaded China, The Pearl Harbor between Japan and the US, Germany's invasion of Poland, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, The Holocaust etc. It began in 1937 when Japan fully invaded china and ended in 1945.

The Cold War
The main antagonists of the Cold War were the United States and the Soviet Union. There were no direct military campaigns however billions of dollars and millions of lives were lost. Western Democracies including the US and it's allies were always against the idea of a communist state. The US and the Soviet Union had profound economic and political differences.

Berlin Airlift
The United States began the airlift to provide West Berlin with a supply of food, water and medicine, in response to Soviet blockade.
Truman wanted to respond tot he blockade however didn't want to cause WW3, allies were tired and citizens were not up to supporting a new war, therefore he began the airlift. The successful airlift backfired against the Russians by underlining their technological advancements and dominance.

A New Civil Rights Movement
In the 1950's the US was under an apartheid-like system of segregation. Although slavery ended, it didn't end the social barriers between white and black people. No action was taken until Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. began a peaceful equality movement. Legal equality never granted social and economic equality. Black people began boycotts, marches, sit-ins and freedom rides in the US.

Feminism
During the 1960's a woman's only dream was to be a perfect wife and mother because she knew no better. Feminists wanted to expand the role of the mother beyond being “the perfect housewife”. In the "Feminine Mystique" it is referred to as the "the problem that has no name." Her “role” as a mother was to keep the house under control and raise the kids. She made the lunch, cleaned the house, drove the kids to activities etc.

Internet
The internet was invented in the 1970's by the department of defense as a military advantage. It remained under government control until 1984 and by the 1990's world wide web was available. By then it was used for commercial purposes.

Reagan as President
His message to his people was to cut down on the government, cut down on taxes and increase military spending. Most importantly he had hope for the United States, he believed that it was still the world superpower and it was time to feel good about being an american. He had many successes as President however he also failed at times. He was involved in several scandals including the Iran-Contra. American lifestyles changed dramatically when he was president.

Information Age
The technological advancements during this age brought dramatic changes to American lives. Technology is what sparked globalization and made it happen, it allowed for better communication worldwide. At this point internet was invented, satellite tv, and even electronic mail. It changed American lifestyles.

Globalization
Globalization was a worldwide phenomenon; however not everybody accepted it. People feared to lose their culture and their traditions. The US wanted to implement western lifestyle among nations worldwide; economically, politically and even culturally. With technological advances in communication it was easy to spread western ideas and thoughts around the world.

End of the Cold War
With the end of the Cold War came the end of the Soviet Union and Communism in Europe. Pop culture and propaganda were huge part of the War. Communism ended first in Poland and then like dominos all European nations ended communist regime. The Berlin wall came down, borders opened up and elections outvoted communism.
