Watergate scandal
Five 'plumbers' were arrested at 2:30 a.m. while breaking into and planting surveillance bugs in the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Hotel. In 1974, Richard Nixon was found guilty of hiring the five men who were involved in the scandal. Richard Nixon then resigned from his presidency, or was going to be faced with impeachment. -
Fall of Saigon
Saigon, the capitol of South Vietnam, was captured by the People's Army of Vietnam. This event is what ended the Vietnam war. The U.S. helped bring fifteen hundred refugees to safety. -
Egypt-Isreal Peace Treaty
This treaty had mutual recgonition of both Egypt and Isreal, complete withdrawal of Isreal's armed forces and civilians from the Sinai Peninsula, and free passage of Isreal ships through the Suez Canal. This made Egypt the first Arab state to officially recognize Israel. -
John Lennon's Death
John Lennon was shot outside an apartment building in Manhattan, New York by Mark David Chapman. John Lennon was famous for being a founder and lead singer of The Beatles, and for being a political activist and pacifist. -
Iran Hostages Released
Sixty-six U.S. citizens were held hostage for four hundred forty-four days because of the Iranian Revolution. After failed rescue attempts the sixty-six hostages were finally released upon the signing of the Algiers Accords in Algeria. -
AIDS Discovered
Aquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a virus that is deadly if left untreated (can be stabalized by vaccinations). About 36.1 million people in the world have AIDS. AIDS were found spread through unprotected sex, drug addicts who shared needles, blood transfusions, and etc. Dr. Robert Gallo discovered HIV and AIDS. -
Space Shuttle Challenger disaster
The Challenger Space Shuttle broke apart seventy-three seconds into its flight killing seven crew members. Disintegration of the entire vehicle began after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. -
Tiananmen Square protests
Students protested for economic reform and to be liberated. The People's Liberation Army used live fire to clear people out of the square. Several hundreds and thousands of poeple were killed. -
"Tear Down the Berlin Wall"!
The transportation of east and west Germany was now easier. People are now able to go from east to west Germany freely. The wall was supposed to be a border between the two countries, and it was another reason for Germans to protest and cause chaos. Ronald Reagan decided to have the Berlin Wall torn down. -
Desert Storm
Also known as the Gulf War, the U.S. fought against Iraq because of Iraq invading Kuwait. President Bush sent U.S. troops into Saudi Arabia, and asked other countries to join in and help. -
Great Mississippi and Missouri Rivers Flood
"The Great Flood of 1993" occured along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. It was the most costly and devastating event to happen in the U.S. $15 billion in damages were faced. -
Oklahoma City Bombing
The most destructive act of terrorism attack before 9/11. This event was acted upon by Timothy McVeigh. The bomb took one hundred sixty-eight lives, including nineteen children under the age of six years old, and injured more than six hundred eighty people. The bomb destroyed three hundred twenty-four buildings within a sixteen-block radius, burned eighty-six cars, and caused at least $652 million worth of damage. -
Impeachment of Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice and was aquitted by the Senate. This was only the second impeachment of a president in American History, the first impeachment of presidents through history was Andrew Johnson. -
9/11 Twin Towers are bombed
It was a series of four suicide attacks. Hijackers of U.S. planes intentionally piloted two of those planes, into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The terrorists/hijackers also intentionally crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and intended to pilot the fourth hijacked jet, into a target in Washington, D.C. but crashed into a field. -
Invasion of Iraq
The United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland invaded Iraq and ttempted to capture Saddam Hussein (this started the conflict known as the Iraq War or Operation Iraqi Freedom). This war concluded in the capture of the Iraq capital Baghdad by the U.S.
