  • Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone

    The telephone was the invention that took communication to the next level for centuries to come. Through this invention, businesses will be connected, families will be together, and countries will stand united.
  • The Railroad Strike of 1877

    A strike due to wage cuts that inspired over 100,000 workers to block the passage of trains and also quit. This strike was the precursor to labor unrest in the 1880s and 1890s.
  • Thomas Edison created the phonograph

    The up and coming inventor, Thomas Edison, showed his skills by inventing the phonograph. This is the invention that is the cause of mass-produced leisure and the start of short films and movies.
  • The assassination of President Garfield

    In 1881, President Garfield was shot on the morning of July second in the Baltimore and Potomac Train Station. The assassin, Charles L. Guiteau, wanted revenge for an imagined political debt. The president died 79 days into his first term.
  • The unveiling of the Statue of Liberty

    Gifted by France, the Statue of Liberty was a sign of peace and was a sign of thank you for the inspiration of their revolution. This was gifted to President Groover Cleveland and was put in New Youk City in New York Harbor.
  • The American Federation of Labor was born

    The American Federation of Labor, a group that was made up of labor unions across the county, was created by its founder, Samuel Gompers.
  • The Gospel of Wealth

    Andrew Carnegie, a famous American Businessman, writes the "Gospel of Wealth". This book describes the responsibilities of philanthropy created by the new upper-class.
  • The Populist Party was established

    The Populist party, founded by James Baird Weaver, was created in 1891 and was the most successful 3rd party political group in American history. It was preceded by the Farmer's Alliance and the Labor party.
  • The creation of basketball

    James Naismith, an instructor at the YMCA, creates the sport basketball. He created this sport to keep kids inside during the winter and to invent a less injury-prone sport to play.
