Jamestown
The famous explorer, Christopher Columbus, sailed the ocean from Europe and landed on the "New World" and soon after they established the first permeant settlements, Jamestown. Jamestown is still around today with some of the belongings from the early settlers. -
Start of slavery
At first they used Indentured Servants for the labor. Although by 1700 most labor needs were used by forcible importation of Africans. -
House of Burgesses
The House of Burgesses was the first elected in the New World. It still operates today as the "General Assembly". -
Mayflower Compact
This was the first governing document of the Plymouth Colony. This document said that theyu agreed to obey laws created for the general good. -
Treaty of Paris
This Treaty was made after the French and Indian War. England gained land West appalachian and Canada from this Treaty. -
Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 prohibited colonists from settlering West becuase it costs a lot of money to protect colonists from Indians. England soon after placed troops in the colonies but the colonists said that they controlled them. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act if a a tax on a legal document. They used the money from the taxes for was debts. -
Boston Massacre
In this Massacre, only five colonies were killed. The goal of this battle was to arouse anger toward Britain. -
Boston Tea Party
In this, England put restrictions on tea. Colonists boarded tea ships and threw tea into the water in harbour. -
1st Continental Congress
This was a meeting of representatives from all 13 colonies except Georgia. This was imporatant becuase this was the first time all the colonies acted as one. -
2nd Contitinental Congress
This meeting created the Continental Army and George Washington. There was the final peace offer called Olive Branch Petition. -
Lexington and Concord
At this battle, Britsish troops attacked a colonial weapons stockpile. This was the first skirmish and it was in Massachusetts. -
Declaration of Independence
Thomas Jefferson wrote this and it was issued by the Continental congress. The colonies offically sperated from Britain after this. -
Articles of Confederation
The thriteen newly independent states united into one country. They came up with the Articles of Confederation becuase they feared a strong national government. -
Yorktown
french General marquisde Lafayette developed a plan. The ending of the war, Cornwallis surrendered. -
Land Ordinance of 1785
A plan to surveying western lands. This plan was made from the Critical Period. -
Annapolis Convention
This was when they called to settle disputes. Only five states showed uo to this meeting. -
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
This was the plan for creation and admission of new states. This was after the Land Ordinance of 1785. -
Shays Rebellion
This is debt ridden farmers in MA rebel due to high taxes. -
Constitutional Convention
This was to address problems in governing in the United States. George Washington and James Madison were the key leaders. -
The Great Compromise
This was when they decided to make a two house national legislative. This was the House of Representatives and Senate. -
Critical Period
The time period which U.S. was under Articles of Confederation. A problem from this time was a huge war debt. -
Washington Presidency
George Washington was the first president of the United States. He made decisions for the United States in the earlier years and only served two terms. -
Judiciary Act of 1789
This was what set up the court system. From this, there were three departments created including the Department of Treasury, State and War. -
Bill of Rights
This is the first 10 Admendments of the Constituion. The Bill of Rights was written by James Madison. -
John Adams
He was the second president of the U.S.. He developed the Aliened and Sedition Acts. -

Indians were forced off their land into smaller and smaller reservations. -

THis was the time period when democracy in the U.S. expanded and more people got involved in electoaral process. Also Americans no longer let aristocrats make all decisions, instead the common man. -
Jackson's Presidency
He was the seventh president of the U.S. and he lost to Adams in 1824. Although in 1828, Jackson defeated Adams becuase more common men could vote and they liked Jackson. -
Indian Removal Act of 1830
This act was issued during Jackson's presidency. It forced all Indians East of Mississippi River and to move to Indian Territory. -

The Alamo is an old mission house. The Texans fortified themselves there and in this battle they fought until the last man died. -
Battle of San Jacinto
This was lead by Sam Houston and the Texans won Itheir independence from Mexico in this war. It also established the Republic of Texas. -
U.S. annexes Texas
After the Battle of San Jacinto, the United States annexed Texas. This was during the presidency of John Tyler. -

President James Polk. called for this war. Mexico wouldnt sell the land of Southwest, so this caused the war. -

Lee oushed the North into PA. This battle was the turning point of the war. -

This battle was in Mississippi and Grant won it. It also cut the Confederacy in half. -

This was a short speech made by Lincoln. Lincoln wanted one nation not seperate states. -

President Lincoln issued this document. It freed the slaves in the "rebelling states". -

Reconstruction is the restoring of southern states to the union. -
